Principal structural/civil engineering works:
The extension to the University of Liverpool Sports Hall Centre was designed to complement the iconic Denys Lasdum building.
The problems of creating a 36m clear span, maintaining a low profile and keeping to a tight budget were solved with a bold catenary steel structure draped between exposed ‘A’ frames.
The roof was designed with sufficient in-plan stiffeners to prevent ‘wind flutter’ and was pre-loaded to counteract wind uplift forces. The architect’s design displays the elegance of the structure and the simple efficient way the forces on the building are managed.
