Health and Safety
The elimination of all accidents during site visits
- Agree in advance with supervising personnel, site visits. Notify a third party as to your whereabouts and always report to the ‘Contractors Site Agent’. Do not enter vacant/unoccupied premises/sites alone.
- Be aware of potentially unsafe structures. Carry out or obtain risk assessments before entering.
- Ensure appropriate safety equipment/clothing is used at all times.
- Ensure there is adequate lighting. Take a torch and a mobile phone.
- Be aware of potentially harmful/hazardous materials such as asbestos – obtain copy of asbestos register.
- Be aware of existing live services – particularly gas and electricity.
- Due consideration must be given to working in confined spaces, working at height, deep excavations, heavy lifting etc.
- Before climbing onto scaffolding ensure it has been signed off and tagged. Before climbing ladders, ensure they are appropriately restrained.
- Be aware of sharp objects such as nails, screws or needles.
- Watch out for potential trip hazards and unprotected edges.
It is essential that hazard and risk assessments are “job specific”, taking into account the inherent site conditions, location and design objectives. This must be reviewed at key stages through the course of the project with due consideration being given to the primary hazards listed above.
